Former Newhouse Military Visual Journalism (MVJ) student Matthew Callahan, a recently separated public affairs specialist for the U.S. Marine Corps, is the first service member ever to be named both Military Photographer of the Year and Military Videographer of the Year in the same year.

Callahan was honored for his work documenting the eight-month journey of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Lejeune in North Carolina to the Middle East. A selection of his photos was published in Business Insider in June 2017.

The Military Photographer of the Year and Military Videographer of the Year competitions are sponsored by the Department of Defense.

The awards were presented last spring at the 2018 Eyes of History Gala, hosted by the White House News Photographers Association in Washington, D.C.
