In our magazine program, you learn the practical skills you need to succeed in the competitive world of magazine journalism. You study the history, ethics and business of print and online magazines and learn solid news writing and reporting skills. More importantly, you take courses that develop your skill as a narrative storyteller with an emphasis on the hallmarks of literary nonfiction—scenes, descriptions, anecdotes, dialog and point of view. You work closely with faculty who come from top publications and become familiar with a wide range of magazines and their specific audiences, voices and personalities. As a senior, you complete a capstone project, either making a magazine with a class or developing your own writing portfolio.

For complete major requirements and a list of available undergraduate magazine courses, see the Syracuse University Course Catalog.
