Newhouse magazine majors learn to craft compelling stories across platforms.

Students come to Newhouse’s magazine program intent on becoming writers or editors for the publications they love. Here, they also acquire critical multimedia skills including video, photography, design, and social media. Whether you dream of covering Fashion Week for Vogue or Refinery 29, attending the Super Bowl for ESPN or Sports Illustrated, or reporting on national politics for The Atlantic or Time, the Magazine major will help prepare you with industry engagement experiences; an experienced, caring faculty; and a range of opportunities at campus publications.

Professional feedback from the experts

In the program’s small classes, you’ll receive detailed feedback from your instructors, and benefit from their professional experience. Our faculty comes from award-winning magazines, news organizations, and websites. Develop your skillset and passions further with electives such as social media, critical writing, political reporting, data journalism, web innovation, or designing interactivity. As a senior, you’ll work on a group capstone project or develop your own writing portfolio.

Get involved in campus media

Build your editorial portfolio and gain leadership skills at one or more of nearly 20 campus publications that cover news, music, food, travel, fashion, and social issues. These experiences, along with the support of your professors and other campus resources, will help your search for internships and, ultimately, a job.

With your magazine degree, follow the lead of other recent graduates who hold positions at Harper’s Bazaar, Teen Vogue, People, Vice, Fast Company, The Ringer, O, The Oprah Magazine, Vanity Fair, Time, the Washington Post, Bloomberg, and many others.
